Walton is about three miles south-east of Wakefield and was mentioned in Domesday as Waleton. It is thought the name derives from  'Welshman's Village'. The local colliery finally closed in the 1980's. Wakefield  itself was once the centre of the clothing trade and the many Georgian houses reflect the town's prosperity in the 18th century. The 13th century cathedral has the tallest spire in Yorkshire and over the River Calder the medieval bridge has a part 14th century chapel.
