Wetherby is about ten miles northwest of Leeds and lies on the River Wharfe. It seems its name is derived from 'farm of wether-sheep'. The Great North Road runs through the town and in the 13th century the Knights Templar obtained a charter for a weekly market. Stockfield Park about two miles northwest of the town was designed by James Paine and dates from the 18th century.
