HISTORY

The Royal Pavilion in the town centre was begun in the C17th with its domes and minarets in the Indian Moghul style. George IV wanted a villa by the sea and thus helped the town develop as a fashionable resort. Soon elegant squares and terraces were being built to accommodate the Victorian elite and the town is rich in 19th Century churches and attractive Regency houses.
