Tenterden: Tenterden is the 'Jewel of the Weald' and was founded in the 7th century by Monks from Minster Abbey in Thanet. In the middle ages it grew into a significant wool trading centre with links to the ancient Cinque Ports and emerged in the 18th century as a stylish and prosperous town. The attractive main street contains a mixture of Elizabethan, Georgian and white weather-boarded houses with bow windows and porticoed doorways, and wide grass verges and trees. St Mildreds Church was built during the late 12th century chiefly of sandstone and has a particularly fine carved and panelled nave roof. The church was named after St Mildred, the Abbess of Minster-in-Thanet at the end of the 7th century.
