Tannery Lane is situated off the Market Place close to the centre of the village and consists of retirement properties built by Bridle Homes in 1990. Facilities include a scheme manager and emergency alarm service and communal lounge. Folkingham lies about eight miles south of Sleaford off the A15 Peterborough Road and has an impressive old coaching inn testifying to the town's past importance as a staging post. Several attractive Georgian houses line the main road. The area has long been settled and earthworks mark the site of a former castle. Sleaford lies to the north about 16 miles south-east of Lincoln in the Fens on the River Slea. Its name probably derives form 'ford over the River'. The area was settled by the Anglo-Saxons and in the 9th century the settlement was known as 'Slioford' becoming 'Eslaforde' at the time of Domesday. There are many fine 17th and 18th century buildings including the Carre Hospital built in the early 17th century. The 13th century church of St Denys has a fine tower and the Old Vicarage dates to the 16th century. Sleaford was very much an agricultural centre but has lately developed as a tourist destination.
