Southend House is an elegant 18th century house and fronts the Footscray Road. The whole development consists of 50 flats completed in 1990 and shops are within walking distance. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency alarm service and communal lounge. Eltham was known as Altham in Domesday and belonged to the Bishop of Bayeux. Its name possibly comes from 'homestead or river-meadow frequented by swans'. In the 17th century Eltham was smaller than its neighbour Bromley but was perhaps more famous with its royal palace. Henry VIII visited Eltham Palace on several occasions but it gradually fell into disrepair. Besides Eltham Palace there are many other interesting places to visit including the Tudor Barn set in beautiful gardens and Page House where Edith Nesbit wrote 'The Railway Children'. Severndroog Castle was built in the 18th century and Greenwich is just a short distance where you can see The Royal Observatory and The Royal Naval College.
