Bourne Court is situated off The Bourne close to shops in the town centre. The development consists of 29 flats and was completed in 1990. Facilities include a resident scheme manager and emergency alarm service, communal lounge, lift, CCTV, communal satellite and TV aerial and gardens. Pets are allowed. Hastings was known as Hastinges in Domesday and probably derives its name from 'settlement of Haesta's people'. It was originally chief of the Cinque ports but this didn't stop it from being sacked twice by the French in the 14th century. In the old town there are still some fine houses including the half timbered Cloudesley Shovel House. Hasting's harbour has now silted up and the fishing boats are drawn up onto the beach by winches. The town developed as a holiday resort in the 19th century and together with St Leonards to the west continues to be a major tourist attraction with its long promenade and amusement facilities. The White Rock Pavilion, built in the early 19th century, contains the Hastings Embroidery which was prepared for the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.
