Boston is an old market town lying on the River Witham and grew up around the monastery thought to have been founded in the 7th century by St Botolph. At the time of Domesday Lincolnshire with its Danish heritage was the second most populated county in the country. It developed rapidly in the early middle ages becoming an important seaport but gradually declined with the silting up of the river and increasing trade with the Americas.
