Burwell  has a comprehensive entry in the Domesday Book and was a prosperous village at the time with two mills which made the village more than self-sufficient in the production of flour. Its name possibly derives from 'spring or stream by the fort'. Previously Hereward the Wake had wreaked havoc in the area and later in the 12th century Geoffrey de Mandeville used the fenland as a similar base for a guerilla campaign against King Stephen. The village has several old houses and two windmills. The unspoilt area of Burwell Fen lies two miles to the north. The fenland is reserved as a sanctuary for flora and fauna typical of the district.
