Leominster was well established by the time of Domesday having grown up around the Saxon Priory which held huge agricultural estates in central Herefordshire. The Priory was closed in 1539 but the Priory Church in part survives with its prominent Norman tower. Nearby is the ducking stool still in use in the 19th century. The town stands at the junction of the Rivers Pinsley and Lugg and was once famous for its wool. Daniel Bourn invented the first wool-carding machine here in 1748. There are many fine old buildings in the town including Bargate almshouses and black and white houses such as Grange Hall.
