Epsom is a contraction of 'Ebbisham' and first came to prominence when mineral springs were discovered in the early seventeenth century. The principal races - the Derby and Oaks - are named after one of the earls of Derby and his seat, the Oaks, which is nearby.

Today Epsom is a busy town with a good range of facilities and a variety of shops with most major stores represented and a range of traditional high street shops. Epsom Common and Horton Country Park are nearby and the town has excellent road and rail communications with the A3 providing quick and easy access into Central London. Fast trains to London ( Victoria) take about an hour.
