Marlowe Lodge is situated just off the Wickham Road to the east of Addiscombe and about two miles from Croydon. Croydon is mentioned in Domesday as 'Croindene' with a Mill and Church and as being the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. It remained in the possession of the Archbishops' until the nineteenth century and was a large medieval town up until this time. Today it is probably the largest town in Surrey with extensive modern office and shopping developments though many old buildings do survive including the Archbishops Palace and Whiftgifts almhouse founded in the sixteenth century.
