West Malling : West Malling was mentioned as Melinges in Domesday belonging to Gundulf and probably derived its name from 'settlement of a man called Mealla'. At the time it had a mill and a church and Gundulf, who was Bishop of Rochester, founded Malling Abbey which is now occupied by Benedictine nuns. Today it is an extremely attractive town with a long curving high street and many speciality shops, post office, banks, restaurants and inns. West Malling is set on high ground close to the foot of the North Downs and is about four and a half miles west of the county town of Maidstone and close to the attractive villages of Hadlow, Mereworth, Wateringbury, Offham and Addington. The countryside is some of the most attractive in Kent and includes the extensive Mereworth Woods to the west. Farming predominates with apple orchards, hop fields, soft fruit and arable land. West Malling was famous in the second World War for its important fighter station used in the Battle of Britain. Facilities : These include a resident manager and emergency alarm service, communal lounge and gardens. There is limited parking within the development. It is just a short walk to the shops. Nevill Court : Nevill Court is an attractive development set at the foot of the High Street to the east of the town centre conveniently close to shops. It was completed in 1989 and consists of forty-four flats off Town Hill.
