Exeter is a cathedral city and the county town of Devon and was an important west country centre before the Romans came when it was called Exanceaster - 'Roman town on the River Exe'. Regularly sacked by the Danes it later flourished as a port with continental trade until the Countess Of Devon famously built a weir across the river. The town suffered considerable wartime damage but some of the old buildings around the cathedral precinct survived.
