Buckingham : At the time of Domesday Buckingham was the capital of the county having been designated as such by Alfred the Great. It was fortified against the Danes in 913 by Edward the Elder and a mint was established here by Ethelred II. As an administrative centre Buckingham was poorly located and the medieval assizes were held at Aylsebury which became the county town. Today Buckingham has some good shopping and recreational facilites and the old market square still retains its 18th century gaol. Buckingham is largely py-passed by several raods including the main A421 which skirts the south of the town and joins with the M1 motorway at Junction 13 about sixteen miles to the east.
