Epsom is forever associated with the well-known racecourse. Horse-racing in England first started in the twelth century but it was James I who greatly patronized the sport when he came to the throne and had races at Epsom when he lived at Nonsuch. Later in 1648 Royalists met at Banstead Downs under the 'pretence of a horse-race'. Banstead Downs are now known as Epsom Downs and the famous Derby has been run since 1779.
