HISTORY

Epsom is an old market town mentioned in Domesday as having two churches and two mills. Epsom is a contraction of 'Ebbisham' and first came to prominence when mineral springs were discovered in the early seventeenth century. The local springs gave rise to ‘Epsom Salts‘ due to their medicinal properties in the eighteenth century. Charles II was a frequent visitor as was Prince George of Denmark and when interest in the Spa declined racing appears to have taken over as the reason for the town's celebrity status.

Epsom is a busy town with a good range of facilities and a variety of shops with most major stores represented. The Epsom Downs racecourse is just south east of the town from where an old bridleway leads for five miles towards Box Hill. Racing has been held here since 1780 with the principal races, The Derby and The Oaks, named after one of the earls of Derby and his seat, the Oaks, which is nearby.

Epsom Common and Horton Country Park are nearby and the town has excellent road and rail communications with the A3 providing quick and easy access into Central London. Fast trains to London ( Victoria) take about an hour.
