Croydon is a major residential and commercial centre and lies about 11 miles due south of London just above a strategic gap in the North Downs. Originally known as Croindene in Domesday, Croydon was a large medieval market town and the seat of the Archbishops of Canterbury and as such was host to monarchs and politicians throughout the Middle Ages.

Since Roman times the town has been on an a major trunk road to the south coast and its importance developed further when Brighton became a fashionable resort in the 18th century. Croydon's central position and the coming of the railways ensured its rapid growth in the 19th century. Today Croydon is an important shopping centre with a new tramlink. There are well known concert halls and theatres, inns and restaurants and Whitgift's almshouses still stand in the centre of town.
