The Mount is a retirement estate located in a quiet residential suburb on the outskirts of the town centre. Woking was mentioned in Domesday as Wochinges and had a church and a mill. Its name derived from 'settlement of Woca's people'. The town is about six miles north of Guildford and expanded considerably in the nineteenth century with the coming of the railways. Today it is very much a residential town with a modern shopping centre. The old town on the River Wey is about two miles to the south-east and the Shah Jehan Mosque was founded in 1989.

The centre of St Johns has a distinctive character with a mix of shops and businesses, including a chemist, small supermarket and specialist stores and restaurants. There is also a range of leisure and community facilities.
