Chorleywood has a long history and was originally just Chorley with the 'wood' being added in the early sixteenth century. Its name is believed to have derived from 'clearing of the freemen or peasants' and in the eleventh century the town of Chorley was given by Edward the Confessor to the Monastery of St Albans and thereafter to to the Bishopric of London.
