Swindon was known as Suindone at Domesday and belonged to the Bishop of Bayeux and had two mills. Swindon station was opened in 1835 and the town eventually became the home of British Railways' engineering works. The Great Western Railway museum is now housed in a converted Methodist chapel. Today Swindon has many facilities and amenities with art galleries, cinema centres, leisure and sports clubs, parks and gardens and several out-of-town shopping centres.
