The Cedars : The Cedars is situated off Milland Road which is to the north of the town centre and was built by Try Homes in 1993. It is a large development of 89 bungalows set around small garden squares . Facilities : These include a resident manager and emergency alarm service and attractive gardens. Hailsham : Hailsham is mentioned in Domesday as Hamelesham and had two salt-houses. It is situated on the River Cuckmere at the foot of the South Downs and its name is thought to derive from 'Haegel's homestead or enclosure'. The town grew largely as an agricultural centre for the surrounding area and in the 13th century Henry III granted a charter for a market. Later it became well known for its rope making in particular 'hanging ropes'. Today Hailsham has some good shopping with the Quintins shopping centre in the middle of the town named after Quinton Hogg, Baron Hailsham of St Marylebone. Waitrose is nearby in Vicarage Field. Michelham Priory is just to the west of the town and is reputed to have England's longest medieval water-filled moat. The house dates back to the 13th century and until the Dissolution in the 16th century was the home of Augustinian monks. The watermill on the property is still working.
