Bicester House is a beautiful mansion house restored by Bovis in 1989 and retains many period features including the original marble fireplaces and elegant sliding sash windows. Around the old lawn of Bicester House is a courtyard of one and two- bedroom cottages and the grounds extend in all to about three acres. In 1584 John Coker bought the site of the Bicester Manor House from the Nuns of Markyate and the property remained in their ownership well into the 20th century. The house is really two. The rear contains the remains, much remodelled, of an older 17th Century Manor House of three storeys with relatively low ceilings. This house was enlarged in the 18th century and later around 1780 by the addition of a suite of grand two storey rooms with tall ceilings, to create a classic Georgian mansion. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency alarm service, communal lounge, guest facilities and attractive landscaped gardens. Bicester is an historic market town situated in the valley of the River Ray, midway between the Chiltern Hills and the Cotswolds. In Domesday it was known as Bernecestre and had two mills. Sixteenth century houses survive in the market square and today it remains a busy shopping centre north of the M40 connecting with Buckingham.
