Asquith House is situated off Guessons Road within walking distance of shops to the west of the town centre. The development consists of 12 flats and was completed in 1989. Facilities include an alarm service, lift and garden. Welwyn is an attractive village with several old pubs and houses including Lockleys, a fine Georgian house, standing in a park east of the by-pass. Sometimes known as Old Welwyn its name is thought to derive from 'welig' meaning willow from the trees found on the banks of the River Mimram which flows through the village. The area has a long history first settled in the Iron Age and many Roman artefacts have been found. The Anglo-Saxons built an early minster church here and later in the 17th century it became an important staging post on the old Great North Road. Today it is dwarfed by its new neighbour, Welwyn Garden City, about a mile to the south.
