In the 12th century a later Bishop was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market and an under-cover market is still an important part of the town centre 800 years later. In the Middle Ages it became an important market town and remains a major administrative and commercial centre for the area. The town museum has numerous exhibits from the Roman period to the Victorians.
