Gravesend is a residential and industrial town and still a major port with a passenger ferry operating across the Thames estuary to Tilbury. It remains the customs and pilot station for the Port of London. The town has one of the oldest surviving markets in the country and this meets twice weekly. There is good shopping and excellent communications with the main A2 skirting just to the south of the town. There has been a settlement at Gravesend for many years and no doubt its geographical location lay behind its early growth as a sheltered landing place for boat traffic. The town was mentioned as Gravesham in Domesday and spelt Grauefend in the 16th century. It is thought that the name originally derived from 'the place at the end of the Grove' and belonged to the Bishop of Bayeux in the eleventh century. Watling Street lies just to the north of the town. A statue of Princess Pocahontas stands in the former churchyard at St Georges. She saved the life of John Smith in Virginia and died in England in 1617 Tenure: Social Rent & Shared Ownership General Information: If you want to call the management company direct call , or if you want to contact the development direct, call |
