Clockhouse Mews, Cabstand, High Street, Portishead, Bristol, Somerset, BS20 9HS Portishead is mentioned in Domesday as Porteshe and had a mill with sixty goats. It derived its name from 'headland by the harbour' and is set just to the west of the mouth of the River Avon. It remained a village for much of the middle ages and grew up around the church and the manor house, The Court. It didn't become a major centre until the building of the docks in the nineteenth century. Today it is a small resort with modern development and good shopping. The cricket ground is in a park which slopes down to the breach where there are good views across the mouth of the River Severn to Denny Island and the Welsh coast near Newport.
