HISTORY

Wingham was a large and important manor by the eleventh century, mentioned in Domesday as having two mills, a fishery and a salt-house. The village has a beautiful church rich in post-mediaeval monuments and owes its prominence to the Archbishop of Canterbury founding a college here for canons in the thirteenth century. By then Wingham had become an important local centre and the construction of the collegiate buildings began in school lane in the 1280s not merely to house six canons but also their choral assistants and domestic staff. Next to the medieval Old Canonry is an eighteenth century house built on the site of the archbishop's manor house.

Wingham is a delightful large village to the west of Canterbury. Tthe village has several shops including post office, bakery, banks, antique shops and newsagents. The village also has a doctor's surgery and a dentist. The nearest mainline railway station is about three miles away at Adisham and trains to London (Victoria) take a little more than an hour and a half. There area has many interesting places to visit not least Canterbury Cathedral and the Cinque Port of Sandwich.

Tenure: 999 years from June 1986
