Aldington was mentioned in Domesday as Aldintone and then had a church, three fisheries and three mills and was probably first settled by the Saxons in the fifth century. It lies on the hills to the north of Romney Marsh between Hythe and Ashford in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the church tower has long been a useful navigation point.
