Woking was mentioned in Domesday as Wochinges and had a church and a mill. Its name derived from 'settlement of Woca's people'. The town is about six miles north of Guildford and expanded considerably in the nineteenth century with the coming of the railways. Today it is very much a residential town with a modern shopping centre. The old town on the River Wey is about two miles to the south-east and the Shah Jehan Mosque was founded in 1989.
