Facilities include a resident manager and alarm service, lift, residents' lounge, laundry and guest facilities. Ryde was transformed in the early 19th century from a small coastal settlement to an important resort and has remained a holiday centre ever since. The town has some fine Regency architecture. The pier has various attractions and the Portsmouth ferry berths at the end of it. The Isle of Wight has a population of just over 129,000 and offers an excellent quality of life in a vibrant community. The island has long been a popular tourist resort with fine beaches and beautiful countryside and two of the islands most impressive natural attractions are just to the west of the River Yar. Over half the island is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the estuaries National Nature Reserves and a heritage coastline. In the 16th century Henry VIII caused fortifications to be built at Cowes, Sandown and at Yarmouth and only those at Yarmouth survive in their entirety.
