Woodbridge: It is thought the name Woodbridge derives from 'wooden bridge' or 'bridge near a wood'. This very attractive town lies on the River Deben and used to be a busy seaport and the many fine Elizabethan and Georgian houses attest to its former prosperity. The center of the town is a maze of small streets with elegant shops fronting the sometimes quiet steep streets. The Dutch-gabled Shire Hall dominates the market place. Woodbridges weatherboarded tide mill relied on the rise and fall of the tides to work the machinery for grinding corn. The mill's existence was first recorded in 1170 and the last mill operated until the 1950's. Just south of the town is Kyson Hill owned by The National Trust and from where there are some excellent walks. Nearby and across the River Deben the Sutton Hoo treasure was discovered in 1939. Gold and jewellery and the famous bronze and iron helmet had been buried in a ship which may have belonged to King Raedwald. The poet George Crabbe lived in Woodbridge as did Eward Fitzgerald, translater of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
