HISTORY

Farnham was given to the Church in 688 by King Ceadwalla and is recorded in Domesday as being held by the Bishop of Winchester. The Norman Castle was the fortress home of the Bishops for 800 years.

Farnham's early wealth came from wool but by the 17th century it had the largest corn market in southern England. The rising prosperity of the 18th century was due to the hop trade for which the town became famous.

Nearby is Waverley Abbey founded in 1128 as the first and greatest Cistercian monastery in Britain.

Farnham is an attractive and thriving Georgian Market town with a wide range of shopping facilities from old family businesses to high street chain stores and supermarkets. Sainsbury's superstore is on the western outskirts of the town and the town has a sports centre and The Maltings Arts & Community Centre. Farnham is surrounded by Green Belt countryside with many square miles of National Trust and Forestry Commission Land including the 300 acre Farnham Park providing excellent walking, cricket and a nine hole golf course.
