York : York was one of the most important cities in the Roman empire known as Eboracum and had originally been settled by the Brigantes. The Roman missionary Paulinus established the diocese of York in 625 and King Edwin of Northumbria was later batized here. The Saxons made York the capital of their Kingdom of Deira and then the Danes captured the city who called it Jorvik. When the Normans came to sack York it was already one of the largest cities in the country. York Minster was begun in the 13th century and the Archbishop continues to sign himself 'Ebor'.
