Shipston-on-Stour: Shipston-on-Stour is an old settlement off The Fosse Way and at the time of Domesday was known as Scepwestun and had a mill and a church. It lies in the Stour plain - the Vale of Red Horse, with Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty to either side and on the edge of the Cotswolds close to the border with Gloucestershire. Nearby is Compton Wyngates, a magnificent early Tudor House much visited by Royalty and taken during the Civil War with its owners, the Compton family, having to pay a hefty fine to get it back. Today the town is on the A3400 which follows the Stour to Stratford-upon-Avon, ten miles to the north-west, so it is quite busy with good local shopping and recreational facilities and a number of attractive Georgian and later houses and Inns. The M40 motorway is about 11 miles to the north east and the M5 motorway at Junction 9 is less than 25 miles. Fast trains to London (Paddington) from Moreton-in-Marsh (6 miles) take about an and a half. Facilities: There is a non-resident manager and emergency alarm service and landscaped gardens. Directions: From the centre of Shipston-on-Stour take the B4035 west to Chipping Campden. Go along West Street passing the Police Station and past the right hand turn signposted Darlingscott and Ilmington. As you enter Campden Road and after about fifty metres take the first turning into Horsfair. Horsefair: Horsefair is a small retirement development of bungalows and houses completed in 1987 close to the town centre. Tenure: 999 year lease from 1st July 1988. No Ground Rent.
