Benson is mentioned in Domesday as having two mills and fisheries. It was here by the lock on the River Thames that the Romans came and where in 777 King Offa of Mercia defeated the South Saxons. Today Benson is an attractive large village with good local shops less than two miles from the old fourteen arch bridge crossing to the larger town of Wallingford.
