Scalby was mentioned in Domesday as Scalebi and belonged to the King. It is a small town about two miles to two miles to the north-west of Scarborough so is now really a suburb of the latter. Scarborough is on the north Yorkshire coast and came to fame as a result of mineral springs discovered in the 17th century and considered to be good for your health. Originally a small fishing village it was the Vikings who gave Scarborough its name, which means 'stronghold of Skarthi'.

Today it is a popular holiday resort with amusement arcades, harbour, sandy beaches and cliff top walks. The Romans built a signal station here and later the Normans built a castle on the headland which separates Sacrborough's North and South Bays. The town is noted for its theatres and there are art galleries and museums. The hillsides are good walking country and there are landscaped parks and public gardens.
