Brideport probably derived its name from 'port or market town belonging to Bredy' which is a village seven miles to the east. It is an attractive market town close to the coast in Dorset and once the centre of British rope and net-making. The town's wide pavements were once 'ropewalks' where the new ropes were laid out for twisting and drying. Parliamentary soldiers almost captured Charles II here in 1651.
