Bexleyheath : Bexley Heath became Bexleyheath with the coming of the railways and is now the main shopping centre for the area. In the 19th century Bexley Heath was mostly scrub-land with Watling Street passing through it. The Parish Church dates from 1841 and in 1859 Philip Webb built the Red House for William Morris and is now owned by the National Trust. Bexley itself is about four miles west of Dartford and is situated on the River Cray. At Domesday it was known as Bix and belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury having a church and three mills. Until the 19th century it was largely situated in open countryside and the original village was an important agricultural centre.
