Lyndhurst : Lyndhurst is mentioned in Domesday as Linhest and probably derived its name from 'wooded hill growing with lime trees'. The Hall dates from the 14th century when it became part of the royal hunting lodge popular in the 17th century. The 19th century church of St Michael and All Angels is in Victorian Gothic style and well known for having work by Leighton, Burke-Jones and Millais and in the churchyard is the grave of Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland.
