Hornchurch is a town which lies about four miles west of Junction 29 of the M25 and about two miles south-east of Romford. Hornchurch gets is name from 'church with horn-like gables' and was known as Hornechurch in the 13th century. It rapidly expanded in the early 20th century with the coming of the railways and in the two World Wars was an important RAF fighter station. Today the town has a busy centre and one-way system with a good range of shops, inns and restaurants. The nearest mainline railway station is at Upminster.
