The Haven of Rest Almshouses consists of 14 studio and one-bedroom houses and flats built in 1895. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service. Maidenhead was known as Elentone at the time of Domesday and derived its name from 'landing-place of the maidens'. Its seven arch bridge testifies to the town's importance on the staging route to London in the eighteenth century. Its fortunes have long been associated with the river and its attractions and boating in the latter half of the nineteenth century became very popular. Turner's painting 'Rain, Steam and Speed' features the 19th century railway bridge designed by Brunel. Today the town has some good shopping with library, several medical practices, sports halls and community centres. Maidenhead Thicket to the west of Maidenhead is ancient woodland now managed by the National Trust.
