Coggeshalls Amalgamated Charity's six one-bedroom houses were built in the 19th century. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service. Coggeshall is a very attractive small town on the River Blackwater and Stane Street, now the A120 Braintree to Colchester road. In the Middle Ages it was a prosperous weaving centre and the town has many 16th and 18 century houses and Paycocke's House, now in the ownership of the National Trust, is 15th century. Braintree is about five miles to the west and lies on two rivers located at the junction of two Roman roads. It is an ancient settlement also mentioned in Domesday and today it is still a major town having gained considerable importance in the seventeenth century as the chief wool centre of the area. There are many attractive half-timbered houses in the town testifing to its earlier prosperity. In the 19th century it came to further prominence as the home of the Courtaulds silk factory.
