Tavistock lies about 12 miles north of Plymouth on the River Tavy and was originally a prehistoric settlement and then a Saxon town with an Abbey in the 10th century. The town developed around the Abbey and traces remain near the parish church. By the time of Domesday it was known as Tavestoc and later became one of the four stannary towns after tin was discovered here in the 13th century. It later became an important cloth centre and for much of the Middle Ages it was regarded as the western capital of the moor.
