Bolton is an old industrial town and derives its name from 'settlement with a special building'. Appropriately enough the town's oldest inn, The Old Man and Scythe', dates from 1251 and it was here that James Stanley, Earl of Derby, stayed before being executed by Oliver Cromwell. One of the town's inhabitants, Samuel Crompton, invented the spinning wheel which was to revolutionise the textile industry.
