The elegant Custom House was built in 1683. There are many other historic buildings lining the streets including Thoresby College founded in 1500, the Hanseatic Warehouses from 1428 and timber-framed Hampton Court. The octagonal Red Mount Chapel once served as a place of rest for pilgrims on their way to the shrine at Walsingham. Several notable people are connected with the town from politicians such as Robert Walpole, to novelists and navigators, Fanny Burney and George Vancouver.

King's Lynn is about ten miles from Downham Market and about eleven miles from Wisbech and about 32 miles from Peterborough. Fast trains from King's Lynn to London (Kings Cross) take a little over an hour and a half.
