Stonehaven lies about 13 miles south of Aberdeen between the Carron Water and the Cowie water. For much of the middle ages the town depended on the herring industry for its liveilhood but today the oil industry has taken over. Dunottar Castle is a famous local landmark to be found on a rocky headland about two miles south of the town. The fortress played a significant part in Scotland's history being held for the most part by the Earls Marischal of Scotland. The area is a notable bird sanctuary with thousands of birds.
