Uckfield is a small town in East Sussex first mentioned in the late 13th century when it became a staging post on the pilgrimage route between Canterbury, Chichester and Lewes. It lies in the valley of the River Ouse at a crossing point on the River Uck about eight miles north-east of Lewes on the southern edge of the Weald. It is thought the town derives its name either from 'Ucca's open land' of from the Celtic word for 'high place'. The main A26 runs north/south immediately to the west of the town and connects with Tunbridge Wells to the north and Lewes to the south-west. Uckfield Railway Station connects with London (London Bridge) via East Croydon.
