The village is also an ancient settlement and in 1086 was known as Cheneteberie - 'fortified place on the River Kennet' and had two mills. Old Mill House is on the site of a Saxon burial ground. Kintbury has a number of shops and a mainline railway station. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs just north of the village.
