Margate : Margate's name probably derives from 'gate or gap leading to the sea' and was one of the original Cinque Ports. In the 14th century the English Admiral, the Earl of Arundel, soundly beat the French in a sea battle off the shore. The town is situated to the north of the Isle of Thanet in Kent which was once an island and is about three miles northwest of Broadstairs. It became very popular in the 19th century with holiday-makers due to its safe sandy beaches. The amusement arcades run along the main seafront of Marine Terrace and other attractions include the Shell Grotto, thought to be a temple of ancient origin and Margate Caves hewn out of the rock more than a thousand years ago.
